An international non-profit organization called Operation Smile provides patients with cleft disorders with free surgery as well as non-surgical therapies like speech therapy, dental care, psychosocial support, and nutrition initiatives. We see a future where safe surgery improves health and dignity. Established in 1982, Operation Smile has operated full-fledged programs in Jimma University Medical Center, St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in Addis Ababa, and Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Tigray since 2005. Operation Smile and Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Sidama Region have inked a collaboration agreement. The Office of Operation Smile Ethiopia (OSE) is seeking a non-employment internship position at SPHMMC in Addis Ababa. The position reports to Program Manager based in head office in Addis Ababa.
Key Roles of the Intern
- Based at St.Pual’s Millennium Medical College, assists the senior patient Coordinator of OSE in patient recruitment and sequencing for cleft surgery that is done on weekly basis.
- Assists the senior patient Coordinator in organizing and conducting outreach activities for creating awareness among community towards seeking cleft surgical services at SPHMMC
- Work with Program Manager in handling patient data management including filling out of Redcap, patient health record (PHR), preparing monthly patient lists and other reports.
- Closely work with the Logistics Coordinator at the head office and SPHMMC team in quantifying and forecasting of medical supplies, medical equipment and any other investments needed for cleft and general plastic surgery at the hospital
- Closely work with the Clinical team and leadership of SPHMMC in further strengthening and maintaining of the partnership between Operation Smile and SPHMMC.
- Execute any other activities assigned by supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Behaviors
- BA in Medicine( MD) from a recognized university with zero year of experience
- helps the senior patient coordinator plan and carry out outreach initiatives to raise community awareness of the need for cleft surgery services at SPHMMC.
- Assist the program manager with managing patient data, such as creating monthly patient lists, filling out Redcap, and creating patient health records (PHRs).
- Work closely with the SPHMMC team and the head office logistics coordinator to estimate and anticipate the cost of medical supplies, equipment, and any other expenditures required for cleft and general plastic surgery at the hospital.
- Work closely with the SPHMMC leadership and clinical staff to further solidify and uphold the collaboration between Operation Smile and SPHMMC.
- Perform any additional tasks that the supervisor assigns.
Compensations
- This is a non-employment internship position where OSE will pay stipends during the internship period.
- NB: The intern is responsible for bringing a functional laptop.
